上次講咗4組容易令人混淆嘅英文字,大家記唔記得兩個相似單字之間嘅分別呢?今篇會講埋常見嘅另外4組詞語,等將來唔會又大意睇錯或者用錯啦!

 

1. Eminent vs Imminent

 

Eminent: 著名顯赫的

Giorgio Vasari was an eminent architect and painter in Italy.

喬爾喬·瓦薩里是意大利著名顯赫的建築師和畫家。

 

Imminent: 臨近的

The fortune-teller says that there will be an imminent disaster in the country.

占卜師說這個國家會有一場迫在眉睫的災難。

 

2. Complement vs Compliment

 

Complement: 使完善/襯托

For me, cheese is the perfect complement to wine.

對我來說,奶酪是葡萄酒的完美配搭。

 

Compliment: 讚美說話

The fortune-teller announces there will be an imminent disaster in the country soon.

小女孩為了贏得父母的稱讚而在學校表現出色。

 

3. Empathy vs Sympathy

 

Empathy: 同理心

She has great empathy with people. She can always put herself in others’ shoes.

她對人有極大的同理心,總是可以設身處地替別人著想。

 

Sympathy: 同情心

He has a lot of sympathy for the homeless children. Therefore, he regularly donates money to them.

他對無家可歸的孩子深表同情,因此會定期向他們捐款。

 

4. Envelop vs Envelope

 

Envelop: 覆蓋

This haunted house is enveloped in a spooky atmosphere, which makes many people cry.

鬼屋籠罩在陰森森的氣氛中,嚇得不少人哭了出來。

 

Envelope: 信封

The company pays attention to recycling, even its envelope is made from recycled papers.

公司十分注重環保回收,連信封都是用再生紙做的。
