Hi. This is Justin from Wall Street English. Have you ever been in a meeting before? If yes, do you sometimes find it difficult to think of how to start sharing your point of view? Today we are going to see how we can state our own opinions in a good way.

It depends on what kind of meeting you are in. If you are in a formal meeting, for example, you are meeting with a client or you are having a discussion with the board of directors, make sure your lines are also formal enough. You might start with “in my opinion” or “from my point of view” before you start sharing your ideas. For instance, “In my opinion, we should increase the budget for this project.” You can also use “as far as I’m concerned” as the beginning. For example, “As far as I’m concerned, we should not spend too much money on this project.” If these lines are too long for you, then you may say “I believe”, which is also a simple but polite way to state your opinions.

On the other hand, if you are only having some informal meetings like General Staff Meeting, department internal meeting or even discussing with friends where to go sing karaoke, then you should not use the lines above as they are too formal. You might say “I think” or “I guess” to state your opinions. For example, “I guess we can go to Justin’s place to sing karaoke.” Then I will definitely say “I think that’s a very bad idea!!”

So next time when you are having a meeting in English, make sure you are able to distinguish if you should use the formal or the informal ones. Alright. That’s it for today. See you next time!
